How to Effectively Solicit Donations via SMS
SMS is a direct and fast communication tool. It’s also an effective way to ask for donations. The challenge? Getting the recipient’s attention in just a few words. Here are the principles to follow to get the best results.
1. Mention Your Organization to Build Trust
Let’s take the example of a text message inviting you to donate to environmental causes. The message isn’t signed. The sender’s name isn’t mentioned either. What would you do? You would probably think it was a scam.
That is why it is important to mention your organization to build a relationship of trust with the recipient. That way, those who know and support you won’t hesitate to open their wallets. Others, on the other hand, will learn about your activities before making a donation.
2. Personalize the Message
A personalized message is a great way to create an emotional connection with your recipient. It shows them that you respect them and that they are important to you. They will then be more likely to help you.
For example, you can include the following in the text: “Thank you for attending our fundraising dinner last month. This gratefully shows them that you remember their generosity. Then you can add, “Today we need your support again. Remember to always include a thank you at the end of the message.
3. Briefly but Clearly Explain the Donation Campaign
Why are you starting the fundraiser? When will you be able to receive donations? People need this information to make a decision. Here is an example: “X is planning to serve hot meals to the homeless during the holiday season. Help us by sending your donations to (link for donations) before December 20th.
4. Provide a Link for Donations
You have touched your recipient’s heart and they want to donate. Unfortunately, they don’t know how to proceed. You may lose a significant amount of money. That’s why you should always provide a donation link. You can also direct the recipient to a website where they can learn more about your organization.
However, make sure that this platform is compatible with mobile navigation. In fact, most people will click directly on the link in the text message. They will then access the site through their mobile device. The content also needs to be clear and concise.
5. Plan the Sending Time
Send the SMS at a time when your recipients are available. This will give them time to think and act. The following times are often the most effective:
- Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.: lunch break;
- Between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.: time to relax after work, before dinner.
Also, try to send your SMS on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. Mondays are often busy. On Fridays, people are already in weekend mode.
6. Send a Reminder
Finally, consider sending a reminder about your campaign. However, avoid being intrusive. Leave at least a week between messages.
