The different types of phone numbers to send SMS

Depending on your preferences and goals, there are currently different types of phone numbers to interact via SMS with your customers or prospects. Short code, long code or toll free… Which one to choose to have an impact on your audience? Discover the benefits of each.

The long code phone number

The so-called “long code” phone number is the phone number as we use it in everyday life. It is a sequence of numbers composed of:

  • An area code
  • A subscriber number assigned to a single company or group

One of the biggest advantages of a long code is that it allows the recipient to immediately recognize the country where the SMS came from. He can then check in the directory whether the company mentioned in the message is really the owner of the number indicated. In other words, it’s a smart choice to reassure customers and prospects.

The short code phone number

The so-called “short code” phone number is a number composed only of 4 to 6 digits. Unlike the long code, it does not contain an area code. It is mostly used for two-way SMS, voting, polling or even for assistance. The company invites the customer or prospect to send a keyword by SMS to a short code to participate in a lottery, vote or to benefit from a specific service. The biggest advantage of this phone number is that it is easy to remember since it is short. Typing is also quick and easy.

The Toll-Free phone number

A so-called toll-free phone number is a number on which a customer or prospect can send an SMS for free, as well as for calls, because its owner has undertaken to pay the communication costs himself. This is for example the case of toll-free numbers or customer assistance of some companies. Their biggest advantage is therefore their free nature for all users, who can therefore benefit from the help they need without having to pay money.
